James Cameron Confirms Avatar 2
A reader of Ain’t It Cool News attended a press screening of the latest billion dollar film Avatar and sent in an e-mail with a quote that should get fans of James Cameron’s latest work excited.
Before Avatar debuted to critical praise and record-breaking numbers, producer Jon Landau said if the public likes Avatar, there could be a sequel and hinted that the it could explore the interior of Pandora. That was back in September and since we now know the public response to the 3D epic, a sequel is inevitable.
We still don’t know what an Avatar 2 could be about but more recently, James Cameron revealed in an interview that he has ideas plotted out for two sequels and that he envisioned the entire story as a trilogy. Instead of Landau’s idea of the interior, Cameron hinted that we may get to see the other moons around the planet of “Polyphemus” and the mysteries they hold.
Getting back to the main news item here, the screening that the submitter attending came was followed by a Q&A session with Cameron and two of the crew members from the film.
Here’s a snippet from the e-mail AICN posted:I just saw a Variety Screening Series showing of Avatar at the Arclight theater in Hollywood tonight, followed with a Q&A with James Cameron and two of his visual effects artists. One of the artists mentioned that they’ll never again do this for the first time, meaning that everything they did in the making of Avatar was just a lot of instinctive grasping in the dark. Cameron agreed with him. He also told him to expect the studio to want another one, as they’d passed the billion $ mark. A second film will be easier, as the technology now exists, thanks to the movie. The moderator asked if there *would* be an Avatar sequel. To which Cameron answered that the plan had always been to make a trilogy of films. Finally, Cameron actually said it: “Yes, there’ll be another.”
The important part is the quote at the end where Cameron finally says what everyone has been expecting and speculating since before the film even released. It’s not an official Fox announcement, but if Cameron says it, it must be true. Two billion dollar films on his resume allows him to do whatever he wishes. Oh, and if you haven’t heard, as of today Avatar is the #2 all-time grossing film.
Obviously Fox will want to take advantage of the heavy investment in time and money put into Cameron’s lengthy project and it’s a no-brainer that a film which banks a billion dollars in 17 days will need to get a sequel. With the technology, experience, 3D models and the in-depth development and research into the details of the lush world of Pandora already done, an Avatar sequel will be significantly easier and less costly to produce… Assuming it takes place on Pandora.
The question remains as to whether or not Cameron will again direct; Will he take the reins once again to have full control over the creation of his ideas for the two sequels or will he produce and work on his other projects while another director is brought in?
I’d like to see what Cameron’s idea of Earth in the year 2154 is like and seeing other worlds also intrigues me. What would you like from Avatar 2?
